Supreme court appointed former judges to investigate Lakhimpur Kheri violence

Justice (retired) Rakesh Kumar Jain, a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana high court, was assigned by the Supreme Court on Wednesday to oversee the continuing investigation into the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
To ensure transparency, justice, and full impartiality, the Supreme Court has assigned Rakesh Kumar Jain, a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to oversee the probe.
The special investigating team has also added three IPS officers (SIT). After the chargesheet is prepared and justice Jain submits his report, the matter will be heard by the Supreme Court.
The bail requests of Ashish Mishra and two others were denied on Monday by the Lakhimpur Kheri district and sessions court.
The prime offender in the incident has been named as Ashish Mishra, the son of Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra. Police have detained Ashish, along with 12 others, thus far.
The appointment comes just two days after the Uttar Pradesh government agreed to select a retired high court judge to oversee the investigation into the event in Lakhimpur Kheri, in which eight persons were killed, including four farmers.
