Sexual Offence Against Women in Maharastra recorded every two hours; Rape cases of minors are more; NCRB

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 18,769 FIRs on sexual offences against women and minor girls were registered in Maharashtra in 2020 – which means that a sexual offence was reported every two hours last year in the state.

Though, overall Maharashtra registered 31,954 cases of crime against women in 2020, a marginal drop of 5,190 cases compared to 2019.

According to NCRB report the number of rape cases of minor girls are more than that of women. Out of the 5,570 sexual offence cases of minor girls, 2,785 are rape cases, 2,699 are molestation cases, 24 are for using child for pornography or storing child porn and the remaining are for sexual harassment and unnatural offences.

 The other states recorded more such cases than Maharashtra are — Uttar Pradesh (49,385), West Bengal (36,439) and Rajasthan (34,535).

However, when count the national figure the total number of 35,331 cases of crime against women were registered during 2020, showing a decreaseof 21.1% over 2019 (44,783 cases)

Majority of cases under crime against women were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives’ (30.2%) followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (19.7%),‘Kidnaping & Abduction of Women’ (19.0%) and ‘Rape’ (7.2%).
