President Murmu appoints Justice Chandrachud as next Chief Justice of India

Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud was appointed Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu on Monday, with effect starting on November 9. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju posted a tweet in this regard.
Rijiju announced the appointment on Twitter, writing, “In exercise of the power provided by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22.”

On the official oath-taking ceremony scheduled for November 9 he also sent his warmest wishes to the incoming CJI. A week ago, Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit began the process of appointing his successor by suggesting to the Union cabinet that Justice Chandrachud, the seniormost member of the Supreme Court, be named.
