New Chief Justice of Meghalaya left Madras High Court with an emotional note

Sanjib Banerjee, the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, traveled for Meghalaya on Wednesday to take over as the state’s Chief Justice.

On November 15, the central government issued an order transferring the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court to Meghalaya.

On September 16, the Supreme Court collegium recommended that he be transferred to Meghalaya. Several groups, notably the Madras Bar Association and the Madras High Court Advocates Association, protested the appointment of Justice Sanjib Banerjee to the Meghalaya High Court.

Justice Sanjib Banerjee had only joined the Madras High Court on January 4, 2021, and had barely served for ten months, according to petitions addressed to the Supreme Court collegium by attorney groups and 31 designated councils of the Madras High Court.

While sitting on the Calcutta High Court, Justice Sanjib Banerjee was promoted to Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

On November 21, 1990, Justice Sanjib Banerjee completed his law studies at the University of Calcutta and was admitted as an attorney. He practiced law in the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court of India, as well as appearing before several tribunals. On June 22, 2006, he was appointed to the Calcutta High Court and will retire on November 1, 2023.

Outgoing Madras High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee expressed regret for not being able to “demolish the feudal culture” of his workplace in a parting speech to his colleagues.

“I apologize to everyone on staff for the long hours you had to work for me. I am grateful for your whole cooperation. In the letter, the Chief Justice, who has been transferred to the Meghalaya High Court, expressed regret for not being able to entirely abolish the feudal culture in which his colleagues work.

“Ranee and I will be eternally grateful to everyone in this lovely and glorious State that we had the honor of calling home for the previous eleven months, and for the compassion and warmth with which we were welcomed throughout our stay.” He went on to say, “We depart with the happiest memories.”
