Apple is developing a new dock that will transform the iPad into a smart display

According to The Verge, Apple is working on a dock for the iPad that would allow the device to function as a smart display and speaker.

According to the outlet, the update was shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who stated that the company plans to introduce the capability as early as next year, transforming the iPad into an Amazon Echo Show-like device that can be set atop a counter or nightstand.

Amazon already does something similar with its Fire tablets, allowing users to prop them up like a smart display by placing them in a charging dock.

Last week, Google announced a docking accessory for its upcoming Pixel Tablet that will function as both a magnetic charging station and a speaker.

Once installed, the tablet will function similarly to a Nest Hub Max, allowing you to control your smart home via the Home app and interact with Google Assistant, according to The Verge.

Gurman speculated that an iPad docking station could function similarly, allowing users to make FaceTime calls and control smart home devices hands-free.

The company is also working on other smart home devices, such as an updated HomePod with an updated display, a S8 chip, and multitouch functionality, according to Gurman.

Gurman reported last year that Apple is also working on a combined Apple TV and smart speaker device with a camera, which he believes is still in the works.

Meanwhile, Apple is expected to release the iPad Pro before the end of this month, with 11-inch and 12.9-inch variants, as well as Apple’s in-house M2 chip, according to The Verge.
